A Lifelong Commitment to East Chicago
The School City of East Chicago is honored to spotlight Chief Jose L. Rivera Jr., a lifelong East Chicago resident who continues to inspire through service and leadership. A proud graduate of Central High School’s Class of 1994, Chief Rivera has dedicated 27 years to the East Chicago Police Department and has served as Chief for the past three. His deep connection to SCEC includes attending Lincoln, Harrison, Washington, and Block Jr. High, and later returning to support students as an off-duty officer at school events. Since 1999, he has participated in career days, spoken to criminal justice classes, and even taught the subject. Chief Rivera credits his mother’s strength and his community’s support following his father’s death for inspiring his commitment to give back.
“Just because you’re from East Chicago doesn’t mean you can’t be successful,” he says.
We thank Chief Rivera for his lasting impact on our students, schools, and community.
Dianna Darden - EC Alumni

Pride, Purpose, and Giving Back
The School City of East Chicago proudly spotlights Dianna Darden, a 1995 East Chicago Central graduate whose passion for her community continues to shine. A former student of Franklin Elementary, Block Junior High, and EC Central, Dianna cherishes her time in the recording lab and the many people who supported her. “That helped shape me into a well-rounded person,” she says. After graduation, she earned an associate’s degree in Recording Arts from Full Sail University. For the past 25 years, she has worked at U.S. Steel and also serves as media and marketing lead for the nonprofit I Too Sing America, which provides scholarships and community events. Dianna is also president of the SCEC Alumni Association, where she helps lead alumni basketball games, student fashion shows, giveaways, and the Legacy Seat Campaign.
“I’m proud to be from East Chicago—and I show it every day,” she says.

Omesha Dunn - EC Student

Central High School | Class of 2028
The School City of East Chicago proudly spotlights Mar’Shon Price, a remarkable 10th-grade student at Central High School who excels both academically and athletically. Mar’Shon maintains a 3.0 GPA while participating in football, basketball, and track, demonstrating a strong balance of dedication, time management, and perseverance. His ambition to graduate as valedictorian and pursue a degree in Political Science reflects his drive and determination. Beyond the classroom and sports, Mar’Shon serves as a voice for the Class of 2028, advocating for academic success and encouraging his peers to strive for greatness. Mar’Shon credits the family-like atmosphere at Central for motivating him to stay focused and committed to his goals.
We’re proud to recognize Mar’Shon as a student who truly reflects the Cardinal spirit, and we look forward to all he will accomplish in the future.
Pete Smith - EC Community Member

A Lifetime of Service and Inspiration for East Chicago
Pete Smith, United Way Community Liaison and longtime leader with the Foundations of East Chicago, has spent decades empowering East Chicago youth through scholarships, mentorship, and community programs. A Vietnam-era veteran, former All-American high jumper, and 1996 Olympic torchbearer, Smith has worked tirelessly to encourage students to pursue education, respect one another, and become good citizens. His efforts have helped award millions in scholarships, provide enriching experiences, and promote programs that lift families toward financial stability. A cancer survivor and Chicago Marathon finisher, Smith embodies perseverance and service, drawing on his humble upbringing to inspire the next generation.
Proudly connected to SCEC through his children and wife, a former Parent Liaison, he continues to give back with the belief that hard work, respect, and dedication can shape a brighter future for East Chicago. Smith also extends his gratitude to Superintendent Dr. Stephen D. Bournés and the School Board for the opportunity to share his story and for all the great work they do for the
community.
Felix Maldonado - EC Alumni

Felix Maldonado, a proud 1990 graduate of East Chicago Central High School, found his passion for art within the walls of SCEC. A product of Harrison Elementary, West Side Junior High, and the newly opened Central High, Felix credits his diverse school experience with shaping his career and communication skills. After earning his bachelor’s degree from the American Academy of Art in Chicago, he went on to launch his own business, Flex Creative Mural Company, in 2012. He encourages young people to look inward, discover what they love, and then use tools to build that vision. As a first-generation Mexican-American, Felix says,
“Being from East Chicago means the world to me. This town shaped who I am.”

Leidy Echeverria - EC Student

Central High School | Class of 2028
Meet Leidy Echeverria, a student whose resilience and determination are truly inspiring. Since arriving in the United States just two years ago, Leidy has quickly adapted to a new language and culture while excelling academically across nearly all her subjects. Her drive to succeed is fueled by a strong desire to build a better future and become a professional in fields like criminology or the creative arts. Leidy embodies the spirit of the School City of East Chicago by showing how Hispanic students can thrive through hard work and dedication. She consistently gives her best in every class and strives for personal growth every day.

Marla Spann - EC Community Member

Inspiring a Love for Reading in East Chicago
Marla Spann, the dedicated Director of the East Chicago Public Library, has proudly served her community for 35 years, with eight of those years as director. A lifelong East Chicago resident and Theodore Roosevelt High School alumna, Ms. Spann has raised her family here and continues to make a lasting impact on local children and families. Through initiatives like the community closet, after-school programs, and a standing Memorandum of Understanding with SCEC that ensures every student has a library card, she works tirelessly to provide resources and opportunities for all.
She believes the library is the “backbone of the community,” offering a safe space where students can learn, grow, and discover their love for reading. From summer reading programs and book clubs to outreach efforts in schools, Ms. Spann ensures literacy and imagination remain at the heart of East Chicago.
Vanessa Hernandez-Orange - EC Alumni

Class of 2001
A lifelong Cardinal and dedicated community leader, Vanessa Hernandez-Orange proudly represents the Central High School Class of 2001. During her time at the School City of East Chicago (SCEC), she played and later coached volleyball and basketball, always carrying immense Cardinal pride. After earning her bachelor’s degree in Adult Career and Education, Vanessa went on to serve as a Councilwoman At-Large for the City of East Chicago and as Associate Executive Director for the Hammond Family YMCA. She credits her East Chicago roots for teaching her resilience, adaptability, and the importance of returning to give back to her community.
Vanessa continues to stay active in SCEC by volunteering, donating, and supporting district initiatives, including the new 2025 Strategic Plan.
To current students, her advice is simple but powerful: “Where there is a no, there is a yes—believe in yourself and never stop showing your Cardinal pride.”
Mi'Yala Jones - EC Student

Central High School | Class of 2026
Mi’Yala Jones, a 12th grader at EC Central, embodies leadership, dedication, and Cardinal pride. She serves as class president, a respected student leader, and a varsity cheerleader, excelling in both academics and extracurriculars. Inspired by her younger brothers and her faith in God, Mi’Yala leads with integrity and purpose. She is known for her unmatched school spirit, always encouraging others to proudly represent EC Central.
In addition, Mi’Yala is a supportive presence in the classroom, hallways, and after-school activities. With aspirations to study dentistry at IU Indianapolis, she credits the School City of East Chicago for preparing her to reach her goals. Mi’Yala truly represents the best of what it means to be a Cardinal.

Jaylan Robinson - EC Community Member

From Class President to Community Leader
Jaylan Robinson, a 2016 graduate of East Chicago Central and former class president, was born and raised in East Chicago and began his education at Washington Elementary before returning to Central for high school, where he played baseball and experienced the excitement of school spirit at sporting events. Today, Jaylan serves as the Director of the East Chicago Parks Department, a role he has held for over a year and a half after nearly eight years of service with the city.
In his position, he has partnered with the School City of East Chicago by supporting back-to-school events, donating laptops to high schoolers, providing Christmas gifts for elementary students, and assisting local sports teams. Motivated by his own childhood experiences, Jaylan is committed to ensuring students have more opportunities than he did, encouraging them to believe in themselves.
His advice: “No matter how hard it looks, you can do it.”
Letise Walden (Jenkins) - EC Alumni

Class of 1996
Letise Walden (Jenkins), a proud 1996 graduate of East Chicago Central, discovered her passion for performance and leadership as a student involved in Leon Kendrick’s productions, choir, and as senior class president. After graduating, she went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Ball State University, followed by two master’s degrees, an MBA from Indiana Wesleyan University and a master’s in Project Management from Keller Graduate School of Management.
Today, Letise is the Director of TRIO Educational Talent Search at Purdue Northwest, the very program that once supported her as a Central student. In this role, she helps first generation students prepare for college and career success, beginning her work with them as early as sixth grade. Dedicated to giving back, she partners closely with SCEC schools and serves on the alumni committee.
Through her work and service, Letise proudly honors the resilience, diversity, and strength of her East Chicago roots.
Jeremi Johnson - EC Student

Central High School | Class of 2029
Jeremi Johnson is an outstanding freshman who is already making his mark at East Chicago Central High School. He is enrolled in both AP and honors classes, has maintained perfect attendance, and has never been tardy—a testament to his dedication and strong work ethic. Beyond the classroom, Jeremi is a talented athlete and an active member of the drama club, embodying a well-rounded student experience. His respectful demeanor and positive attitude have earned him praise from all his teachers.
Motivated by his dream of joining the NBA, Jeremi approaches each day with focus and determination. He exemplifies the spirit of the School City of East Chicago through his sportsmanship, leadership, and academic excellence. With the support of SCEC’s extracurricular opportunities and strong school community, Jeremi is building a solid foundation to achieve his future goals.

Erica Robinson Watkins - EC Alumni

Class of 1993
Erica Robinson Watkins is a proud graduate of East Chicago Central High School, Class of 1993, and a graduate of Morris Brown College, where she earned her degree in Child Early Development. After returning to her hometown, she began her career as a dedicated teacher before partnering with her sister to successfully run a local business.
Today, Erica serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Lisa’s Safe Haven LLC and as President of the Valparaiso School Board, where she continues to champion education, leadership, and community engagement. Known for her commitment to service and collaboration, Erica remains deeply involved in initiatives that strengthen both her community and local government.

Cecilia Rosado Cruz - EC Community Member

47 Years of Community, Family, and Heart
Cecilia Rosado Cruz was raised by her loving parents, Francisco and Margaret Rosado, alongside her two younger sisters and three brothers. She is a proud product of the School City of East Chicago and a 1976 graduate of Washington High School.
In May of 1978, she opened her business, Broadway Food Shop—one of the last remaining true Mom & Pop stores in the area. For 47 years, she has continued to serve the community and genuinely loves what she does.
Cecilia has been married to her husband, Elizer, for 34 years, and together they raised their son, Alejandro, right here in East Chicago. Everyone who walks into her store is treated like family; people come not only for the goods but also to share their problems, talk about their children, and celebrate their joys.
Fernando Mancera Mandujano - EC Student

Washington Elementary | Class of 2038
Fernando’s easygoing and positive demeanor shines each day, making him a wonderful example of what it means to be a dedicated and respectful student in our district. He brings a calm presence to the classroom, supports his peers, and consistently puts forth his best effort in every assignment. Fernando’s strong work ethic, responsible choices, and willingness to grow make him stand out in the very best way.
He is truly a pleasure to have in class, and we are proud to recognize him in this District Spotlight. Keep up the great work, Fernando. Your hard work and character continue to make a difference.

Ray Flores, Jr. - EC Alumni

Class of 2005
Ray Flores, Jr. is a nationally recognized sports broadcaster and one of the leading voices in combat sports today. A 2005 graduate of East Chicago Central High School, Ray began his announcing career in his hometown, calling games for East Chicago Central before expanding to city events and local media opportunities. His early experiences behind the microphone sparked a passion for storytelling, live sports, and connecting audiences to the action.
Ray went on to attend Columbia College Chicago, where he refined his broadcasting skills and developed a style that blends energy, precision, and deep knowledge of the sports he covers. His talent and professionalism quickly opened doors on some of the biggest platforms in sports media.
Today, Ray is known for his work as a professional sports announcer for ESPN and as a prominent on-air presence in major boxing and mixed martial arts events worldwide. He has served as a ring announcer, play-by-play commentator, host, and interviewer for many of the sport’s most high-profile matchups, earning respect across the industry for his versatility and dynamic delivery.
From his beginnings in East Chicago to global broadcasts watched by millions, Ray Flores, Jr. continues to elevate the art of sports announcing. His career stands as a testament to passion, hard work, and a dedication to representing his community on the world stage

Juan Fernandez - EC Community Member

Feeding Hearts and Homes Through The People’s Turkey Drive
For the past 15 years, Juan Fernandez has led The People’s Turkey Drive, a grassroots organization dedicated to ensuring that families in need can enjoy a Thanksgiving meal. What began as a small act of kindness has grown into a powerful community effort—providing meals to more than 15,600 individuals since its founding.
Juan’s passion for service took root early in life, inspired by caring teachers, staff, and mentors who modeled what it meant to give back. One defining memory stands out—joining Central High School students to deliver Christmas food baskets to local families. That experience, he says, lit a spark that continues to guide his life’s work.
Grounded in the values of compassion and empathy passed down from his grandmother, parents, family, and mentors, Juan remains deeply committed to his community. Through The People’s Turkey Drive and his everyday actions, he strives to create lasting, meaningful change—leaving behind a legacy his daughter and community can be proud of.

He has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities and strong character throughout the school year. His academic performance has remained high, reflecting dedication, responsibility, and a strong commitment to learning. He willingly assists with distributing materials and computers and completes every task assigned efficiently and with care.
His dependability, initiative, and positive attitude are evident on a daily basis, setting a strong example for peers. He truly exemplifies what it means to be a model scholar.

Donald Ramirez - EC Alumni

Class of 1996
Donald Ramirez is a proud EC Central alumnus and a highly respected leader in the city of East Chicago. A man of strong faith and deep commitment to service, he currently serves as the Lead Pastor and Minister at The Cross Church and is also the owner of Divine Landscaping. Through both his ministry and his business, Donald leads with integrity, compassion, and purpose.
He is widely recognized for his hands on work throughout the community. Whether feeding the homeless, helping guide individuals off the streets, mentoring youth, or supporting families in need, Donald consistently steps forward to serve. His dedication goes beyond words, as he actively invests his time and energy into making a difference in the lives of others.
As a powerful motivational speaker and devoted servant leader, Donald continues to pour into both his community and his alma mater. He believes in empowering others, encouraging personal growth, and leading by example. Through faith, service, and action, he is creating a lasting and meaningful impact that reflects the true spirit of leadership and community pride.

Miguel Bernardo - EC Community Member

Nourishment for Body and Soul
I am the owner of Nutrition101, located right on Main Street in East Chicago. At 21 years old, I am proud to share that I am currently the youngest business owner in both the Harbor and on Main Street. I started this dream while I was still in high school with one big goal in mind: to bring wellness, nutrition, and community together under one roof.
Nutrition101 is a smoothie shop that offers healthier and better tasting options than your typical stops. Think of a blend of Smoothie King, Starbucks, and Dunkin with a wellness focused twist. We serve açaí bowls, smoothies, energy teas, lattes, waffles, and more.
We are more than just a nutrition club. We host yoga, Pilates, pop ups, paint and sips, wellness classes, and a variety of community centered events designed to create a positive and uplifting space for everyone.
Although we are based in East Chicago, we proudly serve and connect with our neighbors in Hammond, Whiting, Hegewisch, and the East Side. We also have plans to continue growing across Northwest Indiana. Since launching, we have expanded into a larger location, grown our team, and built strong relationships throughout our community.
I am incredibly grateful for the support we have received so far and excited about everything ahead. We have many events coming up, and we would love for you to stop by, check out our menu, and experience Nutrition101 for yourself.

We are proud to shine this month’s Cardinal Spotlight on Alexis Soto for her outstanding ability to excel in the classroom while successfully balancing the demands of athletics and academics. Alexis consistently demonstrates a strong work ethic, determination, and a positive attitude in everything she does. She approaches each day with focus and responsibility, making sure her academic priorities remain strong while also giving her best effort in sports.
Her commitment to managing her time effectively and maintaining high performance in all areas truly sets her apart. Alexis shows that with dedication, discipline, and perseverance, it is possible to achieve success both on the field and in the classroom. She serves as a positive example for her peers and represents our Cardinal values with pride.
